Seven chakra lotus tattoos down the spine

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

Seven small lotus-style chakra designs run in a vertical line down the centre of a bare back, each one a different outline shape with inner details. The linework is thin and uniform, in black ink, with no shading or fill. The soft, warm lighting and plain background keep the focus on the tattoos along the spine.

Count them with me, the way Mother Ysolde taught the wagon children, from the root up. Seven lotus panels nailed down the spine of the Gilded Lark, the caravan that left Ormskirk the spring the big wheel cracked. Each one was cut by a different hand, and each opens a little higher than the one below, like a flower that has been told it may go on being a flower.

Now the carver's son, Tobias Renn, had a bad habit of sleeping in the wagon on the hill road. Every night the petals of the bottom lotus would lift from the wood and drift across the floorboards, and every morning he'd find them lined up on the wrong side of the door. Wind, said the cook. Rats, said the strongman. But the fair's dog would not go past the seventh panel after dark, and a dog knows more than any of us.

One October, with the fair stalled in a field outside Carlisle and the takings gone to pay the fiddler, Tobias took the lantern and went looking. He found the seventh flower on the hillside, pale as a fallen moon, its outline drawn in single black threads on the frosted grass, each line so fine a breath could break it. He sat beside it until the cold came up through his boots. Then he walked back, picked up his chisel, and cut the same shape again, lower on the wood, so the lotuses would keep climbing towards whatever waited at the top.

So if you ever ride the Lark and she creaks in the night, lie still and count the flowers under your breath. Seven, always seven. That is how you know she is still climbing.
