Moon and compass arrows on upper chest
Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A shirtless torso shows a tattoo of a shaded moon on the upper chest near the shoulder. The moon is rendered in soft grey shading with fine stippled texture, surrounded by thin ringed lines, arrows pointing in several directions, and a small dotted circle below. The soft, blurred background keeps the focus on the tattoo, which is set against pale skin.

Dear Mags, the compass in the cab has been spinning since Barstow, so I've stopped trusting it and started trusting the moon instead, which is a daft thing for a man to write down, but there it is. It's nearly full tonight and so bright on the dunes that I can read the milage plate without the lamp.

The road out here runs dead straight for forty miles, then bends for no reason anyone has ever told me. Last night a lad in a hire car asked me the way to the coast, and I pointed at the sky. He laughed, then looked, and went quiet. I'd forgotten how many people have never seen the thing without a street light in the way.
Dad used to say the arrows on his old road atlas were there so nobody got lost, but he never said who they were pointing at. This afternoon I drew a dotted circle round the lamp, the way he drew the boundary of the orchard, and wrote 'home' in the margin. Then I scratched it out because it looked soft. Seven days more and I'll be back on the Lincoln road.
The moon's sitting right over the signpost now, pale as a side plate. I'll post this at the next petrol station, if there is one. Love, Tom.
