Music icons line drawing design
Black and grey · Flash
The drawing shows a microphone, over-ear headphones, several vinyl records, a row of piano keys and a jack plug, arranged around a staved sheet of music with a treble clef and notes. A circular emblem with a central star sits at the top, and three slider faders appear at the upper left. The design uses clean black outlines with no shading or colour on a white background.

At ten past two the fader on channel three stuck again, and Dev Pallister gave up pretending the desk would behave. The room smelled of cold coffee and warm valves. Through the glass, Ruth Amadi was still singing the bridge of a song nobody had asked for, and every time she reached the top note the needle on the meter jumped like something trying to get out.

Dev had come to the studio on Sheaf Street at eighteen, sweeping up for old Lenny Cole, who kept a wall of records behind the reception desk and would not let anyone play them on a Friday. Lenny had died in March. The will left the place to Dev and mentioned only the vinyl, a microphone with a cracked grille, and a pair of headphones with one cup wrapped in insulating tape. The upright in the corner had drifted out of tune. Nobody had told the building.
Ruth stopped singing. "Is it the take?" she asked through the talkback. "It's the fader," Dev said. "It's always the fader." He pulled the jack from the back of the board, blew into the socket the way Lenny had taught him, and pushed it home. The meter settled. Ruth sang the bridge once more, and this time the note held, clean as a line on a stave, and Dev realised he had stopped counting the hours on the clock above the door.
Outside, the first buses were grinding up the hill. Dev pressed record, let the tape roll, and for the first time since March he did not reach for the switch to stop it. Lenny would have said it was a shame to waste a good night on a bad fader. Dev thought perhaps it had been the other way round.
