Shaded feather on the ribs
Realism · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A single feather is tattooed on the side of the ribcage, angled from the lower left to the upper right. The barbs and central shaft are rendered with fine, dense linework and soft grey shading that gives the feather volume. The image is a close, slightly angled photograph of the side of a torso, with a grey sleeveless top and horizontal blinds in the background.

Wenna had been sent up to the high cote at Esk Harrow with a wicker basket and a bone knife, because the royal clerk said only the flight feathers of the old grey herons would hold a clean line. She climbed the forty steps counting them under her breath, and at the top the wind came through the slats so hard she had to kneel to keep the basket from tipping over the edge.

The herons had gone south. In the last nest, under a drift of dry reeds, lay one feather longer than her arm, dark at the base and paling toward a tip that curled like a question. No one in the kingdom had seen a feather so whole. She lifted it the way her mother lifted wax seals, and felt the barbs part and close under her thumb as though they were breathing.
The clerk, Aldous Penhallow, took one look at it and sat down on the step. "That was the treaty feather," he said. "Six winters ago the Chancellor sealed the northern terms and gave them to a heron to carry to the coast. The bird came back without the letter. We told everyone it had drowned." He turned the quill toward the window, and light ran along the shaft like water over slate. "It was never lost. It was moulting."
Wenna cut a nib from the shaft with the bone knife, dipped it in the iron-gall ink, and wrote the first line of the terms on the back of an old tax roll. The ink ran black and did not bleed. Outside, a grey shape crossed the sun and was gone, and she did not look up to see whether it was coming back.
