Shaded flower and stem on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A shaded black and grey flower with a drooping petal arrangement sits at the top of a long thin stem, with a single leaf branching off lower down. The linework is fine and the petals are built up with soft grey washes and darker accents, with a few small ink specks near the stem. The design is centred on the forearm against plain skin, with a dark elastic band visible at the wrist and a grey shirt sleeve and indoor background behind.

The soot tin ran dry on a wet Tuesday, which is how I knew Mother had gone up to the wood without telling anyone. I scraped the last grey dust from the corners with a bone knife, mixed it with rainwater and a spoon of gum the way she had taught me, and sat at the kitchen table with the lamp turned low. I meant to draw the black rose that grew only at the edge of Harrowby Wood.

Nobody in the village had seen it open. My grandfather said it bloomed once in a generation, bending its heavy head over the brook as if listening for someone to call its name from the water. Its stem ran long and thin, thinner than a bootlace, and a single leaf hung from it like a hand held out for coins. I drew the stem first, then the leaf, then the petals, layering the wash until they looked like smoke caught in a bell. Every time I tried to lift the bloom off the page, it sank back into the paper.
By midnight the table was grey with spoiled sheets. Then I heard the gate, and Mother's boots on the step, mud to the ankle and a tangle of brook weed over one shoulder. She set a cutting on the table without a word. It was black at the tip, and when I touched it my fingers came away dusted.
She had found the bloom. She had not picked it. She had only dipped her hand in the water beneath it, and it had shut its head like a lid. 'Draw it closed,' she said, so I did, and the petals I had been shading open folded in on themselves. In the morning the page was the only thing in Harrowby that looked the way the wood felt.
