Soft shaded lotus flower on the upper back

Botanical · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A lotus flower is drawn in soft black and grey shading, with its petals fanning out from a central seed head. The petals are rendered with feathered, smudged edges and a few fine stamen-like strokes rising above the bloom, giving a delicate, sketchy look. The flower sits centrally in the frame against warm skin tones, with the hairline visible at the top.

Sit closer, the lot of you, the wind off the ridge steals the words before they reach the back row. The keep at Carrow Tor was starved out in the winter of the long rain, and when the gate finally gave the bailey was full of ash and the moat had been drained to bare grey clay. Nobody rebuilt the walls. Nobody much went up there at all.

But a laundress called Mab Turvey did. Every spring she climbed the hill with a basket of wet linen and hung it along the broken parapets to dry, and every spring she carried home a jar of river mud from the mill race, because her brother had gone under there the year before and she wanted something of the water kept. One evening she tipped a little of that mud into the low pool that had gathered in the moat, and she pressed a seed into it with her thumb, and she went home.

Nothing came the first year. Nothing the second. In the third, a leaf lay flat on the black water like a saucer somebody had forgotten, and by midsummer a bloom stood up out of it, petals pale as tallow and rubbed soft at the edges as if someone had worked them with a thumb. Threads rose above the seed head, fine as pen strokes, and the soldiers on the wall stopped quarrelling to watch it open at dawn.

The steward wanted the pool drained for a grave, and he sent men down with spades. They came back up without a word and said the flower had turned its face toward them. So it stayed. At dusk the petals fold, and the ravens come in to settle on the stems like spilt ink. If you go up at first light you'll see the bloom still standing there, and the third step on the stair is loose, so mind it.
