Overlapping circles and star on the wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black ink tattoo on the inner wrist shows two overlapping circles, one with a smaller ring inside, joined by dotted orbit lines and small dots. A four-pointed star sits at the lower edge, and a thin line runs diagonally across the design. The linework is very fine and uses no shading, and the photograph is black and white with a blurred background.

The bread won't rise in this cold, so you stand at the galley porthole at three in the morning with flour to your elbows, waiting for the lamp on the mainmast to stop swinging. Beyond the glass the sea is ink. Above it, two rings of light sit one across the other like coins somebody dropped and forgot, and a single star hangs low at their edge, as if it has come to see what you are doing up.

Your grandmother kept a cardboard star chart pinned behind the stove in the flat above the chip shop in Grimsby. She drew orbits on it in biro, dotted where the planets were only guessed at. "Nothing up there keeps a straight line," she told you. "It all curves round to meet itself." You did not believe her. You were nine and wanted to be a pilot.

Tonight the cook's log has a gap where the second mate should have written the morning fix. You pick up the pencil, not the chart, and work the sums on the back of a bread order. The star has moved a finger's width since the last watch. You rub the cold out of your hands and lay the pencil down, because the sums already say what you did not want them to.

At six the loaves come out dense and dark, and you carry the tray up the ladder without a word. On deck the mate is already squinting at the same two rings. When he sees you he only nods and points, as if you have both been waiting for the same thing to come round again.
