Shaded peony flower design
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A large peony-style bloom is drawn with layered petals that curl open around a small central stamen cluster. The linework is fine and the petals are shaded in grey tones, with darker areas at the base and edges to suggest depth. The flower fills most of a plain white square, with no colour and no body placement shown.

The peony arrived on the Tuesday night shift, wrapped in damp brown paper and wedged between the bed tables in bay four like something nobody had admitted to ordering. The porter had found it at the front desk with a card addressed only to Bed Six. Bed Six was Mr Abernethy, who had not said a word since Sunday and who did not look up when I lifted the blind to check the sky.

I put it in a jug of tap water because the vases were all in use, and I did my rounds around it. Obs at ten, obs at midnight, a sip of water poured and drunk, a pillow turned. Every time I came back down the bay the bloom had opened a little further. The outer petals rolled back like the edges of pastry, and the grey shading deepened at the base where the stems sat in the water, as if the flower were settling into a coat it had been meaning to put on for days. In the middle, the small cluster of stamens stood up like a crown of tiny pins.
At four in the morning Mr Abernethy finally spoke. "My wife grew them along the back wall in Bristol," he said. "You mustn't help them. If you pull at the petals they split at the seam and never close right again." He had been watching me, I realised, the whole night, from behind his half-closed eyes. I said I wouldn't touch it. He nodded and said that was the first sensible thing anyone had told him all week.
By six the light was coming grey through the blind, and the peony had gone wide and loose, too heavy for its own stems. I moved the jug to the sill and turned the card face down so the ink wouldn't fade in the sun. Then I went to write up the handover, and left the flower to finish opening on its own.
