Shaded rose design with green leaf
Botanical · Mixed · Flash
A single rose bloom is drawn in black and grey shading, with soft gradients across the petals and a dark outline. A thorny stem curves down from the bloom to a single green leaf, with small red tints at the thorns. The subject sits centrally on a plain off-white background with generous empty space around it.

The lift in Harrow Court had been broken since the spring, so Mrs Adeyemi-Holt carried her shopping up nine flights every Thursday, and on the ninth landing she always stopped to rest against the rail. Below her the car park glittered with wet glass. Nobody on the estate grew anything, not after the council pulled up the planters, so when a grey-black rose came up through a crack in the concrete outside number 41, people said it was a trick of the light.

It was not a trick. It grew one bloom, dark as a coal that has been out a while, its petals shadowed at the edges as if someone had gone over them with a soft pencil. Its stem came down the wall on thorns no longer than a fingernail, and at the third thorn a single green leaf opened. The children dared each other to touch it. Nobody did, because the thorns were tinged red, the way a knuckle goes after a fall.
On the Thursday the bloom finally dropped its head, Mrs Adeyemi-Holt set her bags down and watched a boy called Teo kneel in the dirt with a jam jar. He lifted the rose out whole, root and all, and carried it up the stairwell like a lamp. Nine floors. He set it on her windowsill where the sun came in low and white.
The next morning there were two blooms, and one of them was pale. She never did find out what the pale one wanted, but she left the window open a crack, and the flat smelt of rain for the rest of the winter.
