Blue rose and floral flash design

Botanical · Colour · Flash

The design shows a large open rose at the centre, surrounded by smaller blooms, buds, leaves and trailing stems. A second, smaller floral motif sits below it, labelled Size E. The linework is fine and detailed, with soft blue shading that gives the petals volume against the white background.

Flour was still settling in the air when Marta Pell unlocked the back door of Dunmore Street Bakery, and the ovens had been on since three. She set the kettle going, pulled her apron from its hook, and looked up at the shelf where the old plate sat. It had come from a Hull auction with a chipped rim and a single cobalt rose painted in the middle, the petals so carefully worked you could count them from the door.

Aunt Bea had taught her to pipe with that same plate propped against the mixing bowl. "Don't copy the rose, copy the way it opens," she'd said, turning her wrist so the buttercream curled outward in a slow spiral. Marta had ruined forty sponge tops before the spiral held. Now the three-tier christening cake for the Ashworths sat on the cooling rack, and its top tier wanted a spray of flowers that looked as if they'd been cut that morning.

By six the bread was out and the shop smelled of scorched sugar and yeast. She piped the centre rose last, breath held, nozzle steady. It came out lopsided, one petal folded too tight, nothing like Bea's. She almost scraped it off. Then the first grey light came through the window and caught the glaze on the shelf, and the blue of the china and the blue of the icing were suddenly the same colour.

She left it. Mr Dacre would tell her to fix it, and Bea would have laughed. When Mrs Ashworth came at nine to collect the cake she looked at the crooked rose for a long time, then touched the edge of one petal with a fingertip. "That one's yours," she said. Marta had nothing to say back, so she wiped her hands and went to fill the kettle again.
