Pink and peach flower sprig design

Botanical · Colour · Flash

The drawing shows a cluster of three open pink and peach flowers with cupped petals, plus two closed buds and several green leaves arranged in a loose diagonal spray. The outlines are fine dark ink lines, with soft watercolour washes that fade lighter towards the petal edges. The subject sits centred on a plain white background with no body or skin visible.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody tells you that flowers keep their own hours. Bed nine had a jam jar on the windowsill when I came on at ten, three poppies from the allotment that Mr Lowther's son had carried in wrapped in a damp tea towel, and two buds still shut tight as fists. I checked the drip, logged the obs, and went back to the desk where the kettle takes four minutes to boil if you stand over it.

By two the pink one nearest the glass had unfolded its cupped petals, slowly, the way a hand lets go after a long grip. The peach one lagged behind. I kept going back to look at it between rounds, like checking a pan you have been told will not boil. Mr Lowther could not sleep either, and he asked me what time it was out in the garden. I told him it was the hour when things open that you cannot quite catch opening.

At half four the last bud split. Its petals were creased from being folded so long, and the colour came in from the edges like tea spreading through a paper towel. Mr Lowther had gone quiet, his breathing slow and even, and his son had fallen asleep in the chair with his coat still on.

When the light came up grey over the car park I took the jar to the sluice and changed the water, and the stems were cold and clean in my hands. Three petals had dropped onto the sill. I left them there for the day staff, who would ask who had put the flowers in the window, and I would tell them nobody did. They just came up in the night.
