Realistic shaded drawing of an open rose in blue ballpoint pen on white paper, shown as a tattoo design rather than on skin.

Shaded rose drawing in blue pen

Realism · Colour · Flash

A single open rose in full bloom is drawn centrally on white paper, with the tightly coiled centre and outer petals rendered in detail. The shading uses fine cross-hatched and stippled blue-violet pen strokes, building soft gradients and deep shadows along the petal folds. The rose fills the middle of the frame with plenty of blank paper around it.

Dear Tom, I've done the rose you asked for, though not the way you wanted. I sat in the yard at Holbeck for forty minutes with the engine ticking down and a blue biro, working on the back of an old timetable. You said ink couldn't hold a shadow. It can, if you're patient and don't mind your wrist aching for a week.

The hard part was the middle. Every petal wants to tuck under the one before it, and the centre is just a knot of folds that looks like nothing until you stop trying to draw a rose and start drawing the light falling into it. Dad always said a bloom opens from the inside. I thought about that while I stippled the shadow under the outer petals, dot by dot, until the paper went the colour of a bruise.

Gran's rosebush is dead now, you know that. Nobody pruned it after she went into the home. But Mrs Okafor across the road has taken a cutting from the wall, and it's come up pale pink in a yoghurt pot on her sill. I told her I'd bring her the drawing so she could see what it should look like once it's grown up.

Come over Sunday. I'll put the kettle on and you can tell me whether I've made the left side too dark. And don't ask me for the timetable back. I've already been told off enough for losing one.
