Shaded rose on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A photograph of a large rose with a shaded, realistic look, drawn in black ink and grey tones with soft gradients across the petals. Small leaves sit beneath the bloom, and the tattoo is set against bare skin on the forearm. The person is cropped out of frame, showing only the torso, shorts, arm and a wristwatch and bracelet.

The grey roses came up in the back house at Pell's Nursery the spring after the frost, when every bloom we had was blackened on the stem. My uncle Tobias swore they were dead stock. I told him the black was only the cold talking, and that a petal keeps its shadow longer than its colour if you give it the right light.

I spent that April with a pencil and a jar of Indian ink, drawing them the way Mother drew the hedgerows, working from the outside of the bloom inwards. You start with the dark where the petal folds over itself, then lift the grey with a wet finger until the edge nearly disappears. Tobias came in each morning to count the buds and found me on my knees by the potting bench, ink to the wrists, arguing with one outer petal that would not curl the way I wanted.
He bought the first sketch for the price of a sack of loam and never asked what I had been looking at. I am not sure I knew either. Only that the soft part of a rose is where it turns away from the light, and that is the part people remember.
The last one I drew was the one he hung above the till, with the leaves pressed flat beneath the bloom like a note folded twice. Customers still ask whether a rose will last. I tell them the shading holds long after the petals go.
