Shaded black and grey rose on the chest
Realism · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A fully open rose with layered petals is tattooed on the centre of the chest. The linework is fine and the petals are shaded with soft grey gradients that create depth toward the centre bloom. The skin tone is warm and the white top frames the tattoo at the neckline.

Sit closer, you lot, the wind's off the marsh tonight and it gets into the canvas. I'll tell you about Ada Fenwick and the rose man, because the fair remembers him even if the town doesn't.

Ada kept the shooting gallery at the far end of the Michaelmas field, where the lamps burned paraffin and the coconuts had been painted on by a man who was later sacked for it. The rose man came in October with a cart, a box of charcoal and a tin of nothing else. He would not paint in colour. He said colour was for men who could afford to be wrong. Every evening he drew one rose on the back of a spare tent flap, and every morning the fair folk found it a little more open than the night before.
Ada asked him why grey. He pressed his thumb into the charcoal and rubbed a petal down into shadow, then told her the petals were the easy part. The dark belonged in the middle, where the light couldn't get in and a bloom folded itself tightest around its own secret. Shade it right and the flower looked like it was thinking. Shade it wrong and it was only paper.
On the last night of the fair the marsh fog came in thick and the lamps went out one by one. Ada found the rose man sitting in his empty cart with the tent flap across his knees. The drawing was finished, every petal lifted open to the edge, and he had signed it with a single thumbprint. She still keeps it folded in her coat. Some nights she takes it out, and the centre is still the darkest part, and out on the field the lamps are still going out one by one.
