Shaded rose with a script quote on the chest

Botanical · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A shaded rose in grey tones sits on the upper chest near the collarbone, with its petals rendered in soft gradients and defined outlines. To the right, a line of thin black cursive script reads Every flower must grow through dirt. The image is a close, evenly lit crop of bare skin with a plain background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The band has already slid through three numbers nobody requested when you notice the rose pinned to Dolores Quill's lapel, its stem wrapped in damp newspaper and its outer petals gone the colour of old tea. She has been crying in the cloakroom again. You can tell by the way she keeps her chin level, as though gravity might otherwise get the better of her.

'Mother sent it up from the allotment,' she says, when you reach her by the punch bowl. 'Wouldn't let me come to the Saturday dance without something growing on me.' Her father has picked out a bank clerk called Harold, and in her head the banns are already read. She unpins the flower and holds it out like evidence. 'Every flower must grow through dirt, Mother says. Nobody ever mentions the dirt bit to the flowers.'

You take the rose and walk her out through the side door, past the coal bunkers and the drain where the cinders give way to clay. There you crouch, scrape a hole with the heel of your good shoe, and push the stem in deep, pressing the soil around it with your palms until the newspaper disappears. The music thumps faintly through the brick. Dolores laughs for the first time all evening, a short wet sound, and says the rose will be dead by Monday.

It is not dead. In May, when the hall has been repainted and the bank clerk has been sent to Leeds for good, you cut through the yard on the way to the bus and find a single dark pink bloom open over the cinders, its petals untidy and stubborn, as if it had only been waiting for someone to stop watching the rain.
