Script tattoo reading Can I keep you?
Fine line · Black and grey · Photo
A thin black cursive script spells the words Can I keep you? across the skin, with a question mark at the end. The linework is fine and even, with the letters joined in a flowing handwritten style. Fingers with red nail polish rest on the upper edge of the image, and the palette is plain black ink on pale skin.

Dear Marguerite, the tide tables pinned by the chart room door say the Vesper will be lying off Hobart for nine days, and I have counted every one of them twice. The cook on the Ondine wants to know why I keep folding paper into the flour bins. I told him it is for the bread. He did not believe me, and neither, I suspect, do you.

The brass clock in the saloon lost four minutes last Tuesday and nobody has troubled to fix it, so I have decided it is keeping time for us in some private currency. Mr Abernathy asked me whether I was ill. I said only that I had a question I could not put down, and he laughed and said that sounded like the sea, which takes everything and gives back what it likes.
So here is the question, written out properly, in my best hand, because I could not bring myself to say it aloud over the mess tins. Can I keep you? Not the ring, not the promise. I mean the Sunday mornings with your boots on the wrong feet, the way you hum off-key at the washing line. I will sail to the other side of the world and back if you say yes, but I would rather you answered at my kitchen table.
Write back by the next post. If the answer is no, you need not explain it. Just send the letter back with the question mark torn off, and I will know the rest.
