Shaded skull tattoo on the ribs
Realism · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A large skull is tattooed on the side of the torso, facing towards the viewer's left. The skull is rendered with soft, smoky grey shading, deep black eye and nasal areas, and fine highlights along the teeth and cheekbone. Wisps of dark, smoke-like shading curl around the skull against the skin, and the dark background frames the subject.

Hector had been told the pass at Cwm Brân was safe until the first snow, but by noon the cloud had come down so thick he could not see the mule's ears. He walked with one hand on the lead rope and the other pressed to the bundle of letters inside his coat, the way his grandmother had taught him to carry anything that mattered in bad weather.

Below the ridge a fire was burning. He smelled it before he saw it, resin and wet heather, and then the smoke rose through the mist in slow grey coils that twisted around the rocks like something searching for a way out. Someone had lit a pyre on the old drovers' cairn, which made no sense, because nobody had lived up here since the mine closed.
He found the fire at last, and beside it a woman in a man's oilskin, poking at a skull set on a flat stone. It was a human skull, bleached and cracked along one brow, and the smoke was pouring from its eye sockets as though it had been lit from within. "You're late," she said, without looking up. "The last one was early."
She took the bundle without asking what was in it and fed the top letter to the flames. The paper curled and flared, and the smoke that rose was blacker and thicker, folding back over the skull until its jaw seemed to move. Hector waited for her to read the words aloud, or to tell him what he owed. Instead she poured something from a flask into a tin cup and held it out. "Drink that and go down before the cloud closes. Tell Morwenna the letters arrived, and that Tom is still at the bottom of the shaft, keeping his lamp lit."
He drank, coughed, and when he looked back the fire was gone. Only a grey thread of smoke hung over the cairn, drifting slowly towards the valley where his own lamp would be waiting.
