Shaded wing tattoo on an ankle
Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A single wing is tattooed on the side of an ankle or lower leg, drawn as layered feathers with a dark outline and grey shading. The ink is black and grey only, and the wing sits in the centre of the frame. A black leather shoe appears at the lower left, and a black and white floral patterned sheet fills the background.

You find the wing on the rocks below the lamp room before the tide has finished going out. It is a gull's, or it would be if a gull's had any right to be so big, grey at the tips and dark along the leading edge like something drawn with a steady hand. Your father says it came off a cormorant in the gale, and you do not argue. You carry it up the forty-two steps in a bread bag because you want to see whether the feathers still lie in their rows when nothing is holding them.

They do. Each feather overlaps the next by exactly the same amount, with a shadow tucked under every one. When you lay it on the iron bench beside the clockwork, the beam rolls across it every eleven seconds and makes it look as if it is breathing. Your father, polishing the mantle with a chamois, watches you over his spectacles and says the logbook must be kept straight tonight, so put it down and mind the paraffin.
Instead you keep it. In the small hours, when fog sits on the glass and the foghorn starts its long complaint, you hold the wing up to the window and find that the feathers catch the light and throw it back out to sea in a row of grey stripes. A fishing boat hauling past the Skerry sees the flicker, turns wide, and clears the reef by two clean cables. Nobody aboard knows what steered them.
In the morning the fog has lifted and the wing is gone from the bench. Your father says nothing about it. But on the rocks, tucked into a crack the sea cannot reach, lies a single feather, dry and flat, pointing towards the mainland as though it is waiting for you to be ready to follow.
