Teal feather tattoo above a lace waistband
Realism · Other · Colour · Photo
A single feather is tattooed on bare skin, angled diagonally with a pale quill and soft, feathered barbs. The feather uses fine shading and highlights to suggest volume, with teal, blue and lilac tones fading towards the tips. The tattoo sits centre-frame against warm skin, with a black lace waistband and pale fabric along the lower edge of the photo.

The inspector at Hollin Bridge held the feather up to the lamp and frowned at it the way he frowned at everything, as if it might be contraband wearing a better disguise. Ada Penrose kept her hands flat on the counter. Teal, he said, going to blue, then lilac at the tips. Not a colour that flew over that river, in his experience.

It had come from a jay that used to sit on her grandmother's windowsill in the last weeks of winter, when the old woman could no longer walk down to the orchard. Ada had found the feather caught in the hedge below the church, its quill still pale, its barbs softened by rain. She had carried it through four years of crossings folded inside the hymnal, because it was the only book nobody on either side ever wanted to open.
Vell turned the feather over. Under the lamp the shading showed how each strand had been drawn to look lifted, as though a breath were still moving through it. He asked what it was for. Ada said she didn't know yet. He wrote something in his ledger, then slid the feather back across the counter with two fingers, the way you return a coin that is no good to anyone.
She reached the far bank before she looked back. Vell stood in the lit doorway of the hut and raised one hand, not quite a wave. On the sill beside him a jay hopped once, twice, and was gone into the dark, and Ada found she was holding the hymnal a little tighter than before.
