Shadowy figure tattoo on a calf
Realism · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey tattoo of a shadowy human figure, shown mostly in silhouette with a bald-looking head and a crouched or leaning pose. The figure dissolves into smoky, streaked shading at its edges and along the lower half. The tattoo runs vertically up the calf, shot from a close, slightly angled view against a blurred indoor background.

He was crouched on the balance beam when I got there, a man made mostly of shadow, with smoke pouring off his shoulders the way it rolls from a chimney on a frosty morning. I asked him if he was waiting for the keeper. He didn't turn his head. He lifted one arm slowly and pointed down into the empty chamber, where the gates were shut and the water stood black and still.
The paddle gear had jammed with a knot of old rope and weed, and the boat we'd left moored below the lock was starting to swing against the wall. I went down the ladder with my heart knocking. It took both hands and most of my weight to free the rope, and by the time the water began to lift I had forgotten about the man on the beam entirely. When I climbed back up, the beam was bare. Only a lantern sat there, its glass warm, and the smell of coal smoke hung in the air as if it had been waiting for me.
Dad was asleep in the cabin when I got home, the stove ticking as it cooled. I riddled it, fed it two shovels, and watched the flames catch. Then I hung the lantern on the hook above the door, where the light fell across the bench and the coal sack, and I left it burning all night.
