Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash
This flash sheet shows several rows of black butterfly designs with filigree wings, joined by curling vines, small leaves and scattered flowers. One lower design carries a trail of musical notes across the bottom edge. The linework is solid black silhouette with fine decorative detail inside the wings, and the sheet is entirely black on white with no colour.

The notes had started leaking out of the radio somewhere past the salt flats, and Marguerite Dell pulled onto the verge to see whether the speaker was broken. It wasn't. The sound came from the back of the van, where her brother's old cello lay in its case with the lid unlatched, and the music was not a tune so much as a string of loose notes, each one lifting off the staves and drifting out through the open window.

She followed them for a mile on foot, the road shimmering white ahead. Dust moved in curls along the gravel, and where the wind dropped, butterflies settled on the scrub like punctuation, black against the pale sage, their wings cut through with lace-fine patterns that looked stitched rather than painted. Every time she reached for one it lifted and turned, and every time it turned, a note fell from its wing and landed on the shoulder of the road.
By the time the road bent north towards a rusted sign for Corbel Wells, she had collected eleven notes in the pocket of her jacket, each one cold and folded like a pressed leaf. The town was three houses, a petrol pump with no petrol, and a diner where a man was wiping the counter with one hand while the other held a fiddle bow. He looked up, saw the notes poking out of her pocket, and laughed without any surprise at all.
"Your brother's?" he asked. She nodded. "He owed me a tune." He set the bow down, lifted the fiddle to his chin, and played the first bar. Outside, the butterflies rose from the bushes in a slow black cloud and carried the rest of the melody away over the flats, vine-thin and unhurried, back the way she had come.
