A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lamp at Skerrar Point had not been lit properly since the autumn gale took the glass, so on the third night I climbed the iron stair with a bucket of paraffin and my brother's old oilskin buttoned to the throat. The wind found every gap in the lantern room. I worked the wick by feel while the sea hammered the rock below, and when the flame finally caught and steadied I saw, through the cracked pane, a boat riding the swell a mile out with no light of its own.

I knew the boat before I could make out the man in it. Tam Renwick had sold his share of the herring fleet two winters back and gone to live in the cottage above the slipway, painting the same thick curling patterns on every scrap of board he could find. He painted them on the oars, on the gunwales, on the lid of the tea caddy. My mother said they were a sickness of the eye, that a man who looked too long at the wave-shapes would lose the run of the real one. I had always thought they were the sea's own handwriting, the way the foam loops and folds back on itself before it breaks.

I kept the lamp turning until dawn, which is the only thing a keeper is paid to do. When the boat came in at last, Tam sat in it with his hands flat on the thwarts, staring at the black scrollwork carved along the bow, and he said the swirls had kept him steady, that he had followed their curls home the way you follow a rope in fog. I told him the lamp had been burning the whole time. He nodded as though that was the same thing.
