Shell, oval frame and acanthus scroll designs
Black and grey · Flash
Three ornamental designs are drawn on a kraft paper background: a scallop shell with two oval medallions at the base, a beaded oval frame with a scrolled crest and base, and a tall acanthus scroll with curling leaves. The linework is dark and bold, with grey shading and white highlights giving the forms a raised, engraved look. The three elements are arranged loosely across the sheet with plenty of space between them.

You take the boarding house on Gull Terrace in October because the agent swears the damp is only cosmetic. By the third week you have stopped believing him. Each morning the brass scallop tray in the hall holds a little more sand than the day before, and the two oval medallions set into its base have grown a fine white crust of old salt.

Mrs Pellow left a ledger in the bureau, its columns kept in violet ink. Lodgers from 1921 through 1956, each with a room number and a note beside the name. Room four: "Asked for the frame to be turned to the sea." Room six: "Scroll cracked, not my doing." You take the beaded oval frame down from the landing, the one with the crest that curls like a wave about to break, and find the back scratched with a column of tide times and a name you do not recognise.
That night the scroll above the front door has moved. Its acanthus leaves, which were pressed flat against the lintel at supper, now lean toward the stairs like a crowd wanting a look at whoever is coming up. You go down in your socks with the lamp. The shell tray is wet. The frame on the landing shows a dining room behind your reflection, a long table laid for guests who have all turned their chairs to face the window.
You do what the ledger asks. You turn the frame to the sea and unbolt the front door. Salt comes in across the lino, and the scroll settles, quiet as a cat in the sun. In the glass you see your own face with the tide rising behind it, patient as any lodger, and the ledger open on the hall table at a fresh page, waiting for your name.
