Ship and fish on a thigh
Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A black-ink sketch-style tattoo of a sailing ship above a fish-like creature, framed by wave or foliage linework, sits on the outer thigh. The lines are loose and feathered, with shading in grey tones and no colour. A hand rests on the other leg, and a plaid shirt and dark socks fill the lower part of the frame.

Nobody at the Ship Inn believed a word, but they bought him rum all the same, because a man who tells a tale that size is worth keeping warm.

Nell, who mended nets for her uncle and had heard every version of every wreck, asked him how he knew. He dug a stub of pencil from behind his ear and drew on the back of a beer mat. A ship with its sails lifted, filled with a wind that wasn't in the room, sat on top of a broad blunt head. Below its mouth he curled lines like fern or breaking water, and two eyes, wet and patient, looked up past the lamp.
"She was never lost," he said. "Only carried."
That night the wind swung south and the harbour went glassy. Nell took the beer mat home and pinned it above the stove, meaning to show her uncle, but the fern lines kept shifting whenever she looked away, and by morning the ink had dried in a long dark curve from the ship's keel to the edge of the card, as if something enormous had turned over in its sleep and was settling in to be carried again.
