Owl and foliage on a thigh

Traditional · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A large owl faces forward with detailed eyes, feathered wings and a textured chest, drawn in black outline. Sprigs of leaves and stems spread across the lower part of the design and frame the owl. The ink is solid black with no greys or colour, and the design fills most of the frame against pale skin.

Dear Mira,

The owl came back to the seed vault again last night, and this time it sat on the rail above the bean racks as if someone had assigned it there. Old Tobin says the birds were never meant to survive the Drying, but this one has the look of a thing that has outlived several sets of rules. Its eyes are black rings, ringed again by pale fans of feather, and it watches me the way the inspectors do, as if I am the one who might be stealing something.

I have started leaving a dish of mealworms by the hatch, which Tobin says breaks the sealed-rations order. I told him that order was written for rats. He did not argue, which is how I know he has been feeding it too.

Yesterday the river inspectors came up the valley road with their clipboards and their sensors, and they asked about cuttings from the old pear orchard. I said the orchard was dead. That part was true. The leaves I keep in the drawer under my bunk are not from the orchard. They come from the hedge at the foot of the wall, where stems have been pushing through the rubble for longer than anyone bothered to measure. I pressed them flat between the pages of the ledger so the inspectors would never think to look.

The owl blinked when I came in this morning, slow and certain, then lifted off the rail without a sound. It left one grey feather on the bean rack. I have put it in the drawer with the leaves. If the inspectors come again, you will know where to find them, and you will know who to thank.

Love, Ada
