A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The second winter out of Valparaíso, the mate began counting the salt pork by moonlight, and the cook swore the rats had learned to read the labels. Ninety days without a sight of land. Only Hester Vane at the wheel seemed unbothered, humming the tune her mother used to sing about a bell buoy off Orford Ness.

Her mother had told the story plainly, the way you would give directions to a lost dog. A widow on the Suffolk shingle once went down to the water with a length of tarred rope and asked the sea for a man. "Be the one to guide me," she said, "but never hold me down." The sea, which has never kept a promise in its life, agreed on one condition. It would take the anchor and nothing else.

Off the Falklands the gale came out of the west like a dropped wall. The mate wanted the anchor let go. Hester shook her head, eased the spokes, and let the Thessaly Mae run before the sea with her hands light on the wood. Three days later the wind dropped, and they raised a grey coast with a lighthouse blinking on it like a loose tooth.

At Lowestoft the anchor went down with a sound like a church door closing. The chain ran out, rattled, and went still. Hester stepped away from the wheel, unwound the rope the mate had lashed round her wrist for the storm, and left it on the deck in a neat coil. When the tide turned, the ship swung on her cable, and the wheel went on turning by itself, slowly, towards nowhere in particular.
