A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ada had been told that the stars over Calder Keep were a map, and that the map had been lost when the roof fell in the winter of the siege. Her uncle Tom, who kept the gatehouse keys, said the five biggest stars were the stairs. Each evening she climbed the broken steps to the roofless hall with a stub of chalk in her apron pocket and drew them on the flagstones, hoping the sky would recognise its own drawing.

Rain undid her work. Every night the chalk loosened and ran, and by morning only grey smears remained, while the sky above kept shifting through the gap where the timbers had been. She began to notice that the small stars sat between the large ones like stepping stones, always a little to one side, as if someone had stumbled on the way down.

On the first clear night of autumn she carried her uncle's cold chisel up instead. She cut the largest star into the lintel above the door, its points deep enough to hold water, and then the others, one by one, in a line that wandered down the stonework towards the courtyard.

By dawn the rain had come again and filled every point, so each cut held a small sky of its own, a handful of light the sun could not quite lift. Uncle Tom climbed the steps with the keys and stopped under the lintel. He looked at the stone for a long time before he admitted that he had always known which way the stairs went.
