Silhouetted flying figures with quote on upper back

Lettering · Back · Mixed · Photo

A black silhouette of two figures in flight sits at the centre of the design, with purple brush-stroke washes behind them and a fleck-textured dark area beside them. Two lines of block capital lettering, one on each side, frame the figures. The composition is diagonal and the photograph is taken straight on, showing the healed or healing skin of the upper back.

Mind the step, it's loose, and sit where the lamp can reach you. Right, so. It was the hour before the lamplighters came back round, when the whole of Carrow Street goes the colour of a bruise, and Ida Crane was stood on the gasworks chimney with a length of sailcloth knotted under her arms and the wind trying to take her off like a dropped glove.

Fenn was below her on the leads, swearing softly at the slates. He'd talked her into it. He always talked her into things, that was the trouble with Fenn, he had a face like a church bell and a tongue that could sell rain to a miller. 'Which way, then?' he shouted up. 'Over the Harrow Mill or round by the canal? You're the one with the map in her head.'

Ida didn't answer straight away. Her gran had a saying for moments like this, said it every time someone reached for the next thing before they'd looked at the last. Before you ask which way to go, remember where you've been. So Ida looked back, down over the stacks and the black water, to the cellar door where they'd started, where Fenn had first taken her hand and told her she had nothing to lose.

She stepped off the chimney. The sailcloth caught, and for one breath the two of them hung against that purple sky like scissor-cut paper, all elbows and nerve, and the lamps of Carrow Street went out one after another beneath them.
