Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A photograph of a tattoo on the inner forearm close to the wrist. Black cursive script spells out a two-line quote, with a grey, shaded spacecraft with rounded segments and a sphere-like section below it. The ink is black and grey, shot against a plain wall and carpet with the subject in sharp focus.

Now sit down, and mind the cat, because every fisherman on this coast tells the story of the Margaret wrong. The Dunmore boys will swear pirates shot her out of the sky. I was the one who rowed out to the rocks that night, so I'll tell it the way it happened.

Captain Ida Quayle had lost her bond to the harbour board over a load of tea that was never meant to be there, and they took her berth and her name off the wall of the Anchor. Her crew wanted to bury her in the churchyard with the rest of the lost. She laughed at them and said, "You can take my berth, my bond and my name, but you can't take the sky from me." Then she painted that line on the Margaret's hull in letters taller than a man, and the next morning she had the old grey ship cast off from the slipway, rounder than a pepper pot, with her sphere of tanks slung underneath like a bell.

She went up the night the gale came in from the west. Nobody saw her climb at first, only the hum of her engines turning the clouds green. Then the lamp in my lantern room flickered and died, and I had to light the great wick by hand, cursing, with my fingers burned raw, so that whatever was up there could find the coast. I heard her engines drop low over the water, close enough to rattle the glass.

She never came down. The Dunmore boys say she burned up in the storm. I say that on clear nights, if you climb the stairs and stand where I stood, you'll see a grey shape slide past the moon, turning slowly, as if she's still looking for the light.
