You are nineteen the summer the ferry stops running on Sundays, and the harbour wall at Porthkell fills with men who have nothing left to haul. Your mother sells crab from a cool box beside the chandlery. You sell nothing, because you have decided to be the one who waits for the boat that does not come, and waiting takes all your hours.

Every evening you walk out to the north pier where the railings are rust-coloured and read the notice board nobody reads. Someone has pinned a yellowed poster there for a dance in the old lifeboat house, dated 1962. In the corner a girl has drawn a crown in biro, then a boy beside it, then crossed both out and drawn them again. You trace the crossing lines with your thumb. Nobody has claimed that dance in sixty years, and still you come.

On the last Sunday of August a stranger in a salt-stiff coat sits on the bollard beside you and asks what you are looking at. You tell him it is a dance that is already over. He says the best ones usually are, laughs at his own joke, then asks whether the lifeboat house still has the floor that sounds hollow underfoot. You realise he has been here before, long ago, and that he is going to ask you to dance whatever you say.

Under the crown, in smaller letters you have never noticed, the poster says: Bring a partner, or come alone and be given one. He reads it aloud in his terrible voice, folds the corner back where it has always been folded, and holds out his hand. Behind you the hall floor booms once, then twice, like someone knocking to be let in, and you go in.
