Silver lining script on the upper chest
Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A person in a grey V-neck top sits holding a dark mug, with a patterned blanket across their lap. The words silver lining are written in a thin, flowing script tattoo just below the collarbone. The black ink is crisp and even, and the soft, neutral background keeps the tattoo as the clear focus.

The flour sack had split in the night, so Nell Hobday swept the bakehouse floor twice before the lamps were lit, and still a fine white dust lay along the windowsill where the first grey light could find it. Rain had come down on Crowle Bottom for three days without stopping, and nobody had come for bread.

At half past four a knock came at the back door. It was Osric Dunn, the carter, his cart empty behind him and his mare standing lame in the yard. He asked whether there was any loaf left from yesterday that might keep a child fed until the road cleared. Nell had one tin of rye, hard as slate. She wrapped it in muslin and said the price would be the story of how he came to be out in weather like this.
He told her the bridge at Sallow Ford had gone under in the night, that the cart had sat a night in a ditch, and that he was ashamed to go home with nothing in his hands. Nell said that was no story at all, that was a Tuesday, and he laughed for the first time in days. Then he told her the rest, about his brother's debts and a horse that would not be sold, and she listened with her elbows in the dough until the bread was in the oven.
When Osric had gone the rain thinned to nothing. Nell opened the shutter and saw that the cloud over the church tower had torn along one edge, and the bright rim of it was the colour of a spoon. Her mother had called that a silver lining and told her never to waste it. The light ran down the wet slates and found the flour on the sill, and Nell left it lying there and swept nothing more that morning.
