Silver metallic scale and feather tattoos

Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A woman sits on sand with her back to the camera, one arm raised to her head. Silver metallic designs include an eye motif and a band of scales on the upper arm, plus a column of scales, small rosettes and a feather running down the back. The bright, reflective silver against warm skin is set against a sea and hillside backdrop with soft natural light.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You have been stitching sequins onto the costume since the light went off the pier, and the thread keeps knotting because your fingers won't keep still. Mrs Abbott at the box office says the band won't wait for a seamstress, so you bite the cotton and try again. Through the open door the sea lies flat and pewter-grey, and somebody in the next room is playing a gramophone at the wrong speed.

Your father taught you to clean herring on the harbour wall, flicking the scales off with the back of a knife so they lifted into the wind like loose coins. He said a fish that shines like that has been living on hope. You didn't understand him then. You only knew the scales stayed in the creases of your knuckles for days, a dusting that caught the lamp every time you reached for a rope.

So you take the tin of lacquer from the dresser, dab it along the seam of the bodice, and press in the last feathers you cut from an old fan. The sequins catch the bulb above the stage and throw small moons across the ceiling. When the band strikes up the foxtrot, you step onto the boards, and nobody in the hall notices the sand still caught in the hem.

At the interval you find the eye-shaped sequin you lost in the cloakroom, pinned to the lapel of a stranger who has watched you all night. He hands it back with a small bow and says the sea must have sent it to you. You laugh, because you know it was only a tailor's pin and a careless hand. Still, you tuck it beneath your collar, and when the music starts again you go back out to dance.
