Winged moth tattoo on lower back by the sea

Back · Black and grey · Photo

A woman seen from behind stands on rocky ground by the sea, with bright sunlight flaring at the top of the frame. Her dark winged moth tattoo sits on her lower back, with small lines of lettering above it that are too small to read clearly. The ink is dark with no colour, and the bright, open composition places the tattoo against blue sky and turquoise water.

I have kept the lamp on the headland since the new moon. Every night the moths rise out of the reeds and beat themselves against the horn, dozens at first and then hundreds, until their wings lie grey on the rock and the wind takes what is left. Old Thaleia, who keeps her goats below the chapel, says a moth wants only the one bright thing it can see and will fly at it until it has nothing left to fly with. I told her that was foolish. A moth is only doing what it was made for.

Yesterday I climbed down to the cove where the water goes green over the flat stones, and I found one still alive in a crack. Its wings were open flat as a pressed leaf, dusted gold where the sun had caught them. It did not move when I touched it, so I set it on the warm rock where the light could reach it and left it to take what it could.

I will not light the lamp tonight. Come home by the shore path, not the road, and walk down past the cove. You will see whether I have left anything bright for you to find.
