Metallic temporary tattoos on a back and arms

Back · Colour · Photo

A woman seen from behind holds her hair up with one hand, with a black bikini top and a sunlit sea and rocky shoreline behind her. A vertical line of small metallic dots runs down her spine, and gold and silver temporary designs with circles and small motifs sit on her upper arm and forearm. The metallic ink reflects the sunlight and the composition is centred on the back and raised arms.

The tide had already turned when Nell Harrow carried her father's tin box down the slick rocks, the lid tied shut with fishing twine. Below her the bay was full of noon glare, and the water kept lifting white at its edges as if it had something to say.

Nell was the tinsmith's girl in Porthgarra, and everyone knew the sea had taken two boats the winter before and kept the men as well. Her father had made the lamps that guided the boats home and had never once been paid in coin, only in mackerel and promises. Nell meant to collect.

She knelt on the flattest rock and opened the box. Inside lay a hundred small discs, punched from old sheet tin and beaten thin until they caught the light like scales. She set them along the wet stone in a line, a thumb's width apart, the way her father had taught her. "Take these," she said, "and give back what is ours."

The sea rolled in, pulled at the first disc, and went quiet. Each one it took came back on the next tide, glinting in the shallows, and the men caught in fog that week swore they steered by a trail of little lights running from the headland to the harbour mouth. By evening only one disc was left in her palm. She could have kept it. Instead she tossed it into the spray, a gull dropped down to look, and the water lay flat as a closed hand until the boats came in.
