Singing performer with microphone on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a singer with long, flowing hair and an open mouth, tilted back as if mid-performance, with one hand gripping a microphone and a second hand with rings extended below. The linework is soft and the shading is smooth, with strong contrast in the hair and hands. The design is entirely in black and grey ink and fills the forearm from wrist to elbow in a vertical composition.

The generator coughed twice and died, and the crowd in the inner ward groaned like a field of cattle. Maggie Coyle didn't wait for the lights to come back. She pulled the mic from its stand, pressed her thumb to the dead switch out of habit, and sang anyway, her voice climbing past the broken curtain wall where the swifts were still circling.

Nobody had wanted to play Harrowgate Castle. The trust let the ruin out for weddings and county fairs, and the sound man, a nervous boy called Tomasz, had warned her that the stone threw everything back a half-beat late. She had laughed. Forty years of pub back rooms had taught her how to sing into a space that didn't care. Now her first verse came back at her from the keep, thin and wrong, and the crowd went quiet to listen.

She knew then the echo wasn't hers. It sang the chorus of her mother's song, the one she had never sung on any stage, and it sang it in a voice like a kettle lid on the boil. Maggie slid a silver ring off her finger, tapped it twice against the microphone head, and held her hand out flat toward the dark archway, the way her mother used to beckon the tide in off the sands.

The answer came back closer this time, and it was almost a laugh. Maggie finished the song with the echo a line behind her, and when the lights finally stuttered on, the ward was full of people with their mouths open and no sound coming out. She hung the mic on the arch, wiped her eyes with the back of her ringed hand, and waited for the stone to have the last word.
