Guitar and skulls on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
An electric guitar stands upright in front of two skulls, with wispy smoke curling behind them. The guitar, skulls and cable are shaded in soft greys with fine highlights, and a red guitar pick near the top right is the only strong colour. The design fills the centre of the frame on a forearm, with the cable looping down to the bottom edge.

The amp was still ticking as it cooled when Dessa pulled the lead from the wall and the basement went quiet except for the fan. Smoke from the session hung under the strip light, the kind of haze that gets into your coat and stays there for a week. Her uncle Ray had always said the room ran on two things, cheap cigarettes and a dodgy earth wire, and tonight it had been generous with the first.

The guitar leaned against the mixing desk where Ray had left it on the Tuesday he didn't come back up the stairs. Black body, a chip out of one horn, the scratchplate worn pale by his thumb. Dessa had not touched it in four years. Tonight the drummer, a lad from Barnsley who had asked for nothing but a glass of water, had tossed a red plectrum onto the carpet after the last take, and she had picked it up before she thought about it. It was the colour of a brake light, with a thumbprint worn into one face.
She coiled the cable the way Ray had taught her, over the elbow and under, so it wouldn't kink. On the shelf the skull tin still held his spare strings, and beside it the mug with the crack he'd never let anyone throw away. Nobody plays that guitar again, she told herself. Then she lifted it onto its stand, plugged it in, and let the amp warm up. When she turned the volume up, the room answered with a low hum that sounded almost like his laugh, and she slipped the red pick into her shirt pocket.
