Single daisy on a long stem
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A single daisy with a stippled centre and dotted shading along its petals sits at the top of a long, thin stem. Two small leaves branch from the stem partway down, and the stem ends in a point at the bottom. The design is drawn in black fine lines on a plain pale background, with no colour and no body part shown.

Right, Kofi, shush now, and mind your drip while you sit up. The moon's come round the car park lamp the way it does at this hour, so you can look out at it if you like. Have you heard about the daisy that grew in the crack by the loading bay? Nobody planted it. It came up between two slabs of concrete the summer they put in the new lift, and the porters all swore it was too stubborn to die.

It had a stem as long as a fire escape, because all the light was on the far side of the wall and the daisy had decided it would rather be tall and thin than short and sensible. Every night Dennis, the night porter with a torch in his breast pocket, walked past it on his rounds and said, 'Still there, are you?' And the daisy, being polite, would dip its head a little in the wind.
Then one November the wind got up properly and bent the stem nearly down to the gutter. Dennis came out in his slippers with a roll of tape and a lolly stick and splinted it, with two little leaves, one on each side, like a pair of hands holding on. He never mentioned it to anyone. Some things you do quietly.
The daisy came through the winter. In spring it opened, white petals going out like the spokes of a lamp, and the middle went dark and dotted like a shake of pepper. Dennis plucked one petal, held it up to the window, and counted under his breath. She loves me. She loves me not. He reached the end and it came out odd, so he laughed and said that was that settled, and went back to his rounds. Now, eyes shut, and I'll count you the same way.
