Dandelions with drifting seeds
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
The drawing shows two dandelion seed heads on thin, curving stems, with a cluster of loose seeds blowing off towards the top right. The stems loop down into a leaf-like form at the bottom, and the linework is sketchy with light shading on the seed heads. It is drawn in a single warm brown ink on a pinkish sepia background, with no skin or body visible.

Across the room Gary Teale was still wearing the same ridiculous tie he had worn to the leavers' disco, and he was pretending not to look at her.

They had been the two who never went anywhere together, which was why it surprised everyone when they ended up sharing a bench by the bins at lunch, picking seeds off the verge and blowing them at the Year Eleven boys. Gary had told her that every seed was a wish nobody had spent yet. She had believed him for a whole summer.
He crossed the hall now with two cups of squash and set one down beside her. "Still got that?" he asked, nodding at the stalk in her hand.
"Some of it."
"Make a wish, then."
She blew. The seeds lifted off into the strip lights and rode the warm air up to the high windows, where they caught the last of the sun and drifted out over the car park, thinning and turning, until nothing was left on her palm but the bare green stalk.
