Sister quote tattoo on the side ribs
Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
The image shows two close photographs of the same black script quote tattooed across the side of the torso, with the first line above the second. The lettering is crisp, with clean, even linework and light grey shading giving the text a soft edge. The photos are in black and white, and the skin is framed against a white fabric at the top edge.

The ladder shudders on the soft ground of the Pennick orchard, and you hold it steady with both hands while Mags climbs, swearing at the Bramleys for hanging so high. It is the last week of August. Wasps have found the windfalls under the Cox trees, and the air smells of cider and bruised sugar. You have not properly spoken since the row at Mum's kitchen table, when she said you always had to be the one who left, and you said at least someone in this family could leave.

She drops an apple into your bag without looking down. 'Careful,' she says. 'That one's bruised.' You want to be angry with her, and you are, but the bruise is the size of a thumbprint and you know exactly whose thumb. You remember the summer you were nine, when she carried you piggyback the length of this lane because your sandal had split, and told the dog it was a horse. Nobody else in your life has ever been that stubborn on your behalf.
By four the bags are heavy and the light has gone the colour of weak tea. Mags sits on the tailgate of the van and peels a Cox with her thumbnail in one long curl, the way Dad used to, and hands you the end of it. You take it. Neither of you says sorry, because you were both raised by people who thought apologising was for shopkeepers.
Then she pulls out her phone and turns the screen toward you. The message has been drafted and deleted so many times you can see the ghosts of it. It says only: Come for Christmas. I'll make the bad gravy. You laugh so hard the wasps scatter, and the apple peel drops into the grass between your boots, and you leave it there.
