Two black and grey script lettering tattoos on a forearm, reading For her I'd risk it all and Because of her I will not fall.

Script quotes on two forearms

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The top photograph shows the phrase "For her I'd risk it all" in black script across the inner forearm, and the lower photograph shows "Because of her I will not fall" in a similar script on another forearm. The linework is smooth and fairly fine, with solid black ink and no shading. The two images are stacked, with a plain, slightly out of focus background behind each arm.

Frank had been up the old pear tree since before the church bell, and Nell stood at the foot of the ladder with both hands locked on the rails, telling him the rungs were soft. "They're sound," he said, though a fresh splinter had come away under his palm. The wall behind the greenhouse had come down in February, and the pear had leaned into the gap like someone listening at a door. He wanted it pruned before the wind came off the estuary and split it.

She didn't argue, which was how he knew she was frightened. Instead she counted the rungs under her breath and asked what he would do if the limb went. He said he'd come down quick. She said quick wasn't a plan. He reached for the cut near the top, the saw whining, and the branch gave a crack like a shot. The ladder tipped, the world swung sideways, and then her shoulder was under the rail, her heels dug into wet gravel, her whole weight braced against the wood.

They stayed like that for a long breath, neither of them moving. Then she laughed, a short, wrecked sound, and said, "Well, that's you not falling, then." He came down one rung at a time, and when his boots touched the ground he didn't let go of her wrist.

By evening the pear was cut back to a clean crown, and the offcuts were stacked by the gate. They left the last long limb standing, bent low over the gap in the wall, so that anyone walking past could see it had been saved rather than broken.
