Sitting cat silhouette on the ribs
Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A small solid black silhouette of a cat sitting upright, facing left with its tail curled to the right, is tattooed on the side of the torso. The design is filled in with uniform black ink and has no shading or fine detail, and it sits in the middle of a plain, pale patch of skin. The photo is a close, casual shot with a dark waistband at the top and a white top and silver bracelet at the edges.

He was black as a coal scuttle and nobody owned him. Every morning at ten to nine he sat on the low wall by the gate, upright, tail wrapped round his feet as if he'd been told to wait for a bus. Mr Aspinall the caretaker said he was a stray. Mrs Ogden in the office said he was a nuisance. But the year we were fourteen, a girl called Marion Peel started waiting with him each morning, because her mum worked nights and she couldn't face the empty house before registration.
Then one Saturday in the summer of that year, her family were gone to Bolton, with no goodbye and not so much as a note in the lost property tin. The cat kept sitting on that wall anyway. Every single morning, ten to nine, facing the road she'd have come up.
Last month a lad from the year below sent me a picture of the gate, and there on the wall, black as ever, sat a cat with its tail curled round its feet. Same spot. Same road. Somebody's got to tell Marion he's still waiting.
