The cat came aboard at Braunston with a wet tail and no name, which my father said was the only sensible way for a cat to arrive. We were three days out of the marina, the Lilith Rose low in the water with coal, and I was twelve and sick of being told to keep my hands off the tiller.

She sat on the cabin roof every evening in the same spot, a black shape against the sky, her back to the lock gates, watching the water go by as if it owed her money. Dad called her Sergeant. I called her nothing, because I was sure she'd leave at the next mooring. She never did. When the lock-keeper at Hatton asked whose cat she was, my father shrugged and said she belonged to whichever boat she was sitting on.
The winter we laid up at Bancroft Basin, the canal froze hard enough to walk on, and Dad went up to the village for paraffin and didn't come back before dark. I sat in the cabin with the stove ticking and the cat pressed against my shins. Near midnight she stood, stretched, and walked to the door, and kept looking back until I put on my coat. She led me along the towpath, through the reeds, to the bank where he had gone through the ice up to his waist, clinging to a bollard with his hands gone white.
We got him out with the boathook and a length of rope. He said afterwards he'd only been sitting down for a minute. The cat settled on the bollard beside us, perfectly still, the way she always did, as if she had arranged the whole thing and was waiting to be thanked. I thanked her. She didn't look at me. She never did, unless she wanted something.
