Six colourful swirl and motif flash designs

Botanical · Colour · Flash

A vertical sheet of six separate tattoo-style designs on a white background, each with ornamental swirls and curling vines. The motifs include pink butterflies, blue gem shapes, red apples with green leaves, a cloud and lightning bolt, a heart-shaped outline holding balloons, and a pink star within floral scrolls. The designs use flat, solid fills in pink, blue, purple, red, green and yellow, with thin outlines and simple shading.

Every night after Mrs Okafor pulled down the shutters on the High Street parlour, the flash sheets on the back wall argued about who had been picked first. The butterflies always claimed seniority. They had been drawn in the spring, when the frames still smelled of lemon polish, and they never let anyone forget it.

The apples said nothing about it. Three red apples sat on their green vine like plums on a tray, and they knew they were the only design anyone ordered for a grandmother's birthday. The gems, pale blue as a swimming bath, kept polishing each other with their points. The star at the bottom had the most floral scrolls and the least patience, and it was the star who suggested the contest.

Whoever could hold a passer-by at the window longest would take the front spot in the morning. The cloud tried first, puffing itself up until its lightning bolt crackled against the glass. A boy with a bicycle stopped, then pedalled off. The balloons tried next, bobbing their little strings. A girl pressed her nose to the pane, and for a moment everything held.

In the morning a woman came in with a crumpled photograph of her late father's allotment and asked whether anything could go on her wrist to remember the shed. Mrs Okafor sighed, reached past the star and the gems, and tapped the apple vine. "Something small," she said, "that keeps a little of the orchard." The butterflies had never been so quiet.
