Six small fine line tattoo designs in a grid
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
The image is a grid of six small black line drawings on pale grey and cream backgrounds. The designs include a row of mountains with a crescent moon, a bare tree with stars above it, a leaf shape, a curled serpent beside two upright blades, a ring encircled by fine lettering, and an ornate bar-shaped motif. The linework is thin and even, with minimal shading and no colour.

Dear Ysolde, the post coach has finally stopped at Hollin Ford, so you may stop frowning at the empty road. I am sending the leaf you asked for, pressed flat between two pages of the survey book. It came from the last tree on the eastern ridge, the one the surveyors call the Lantern Ash, though it has not carried a lantern in my lifetime. Keep it out of the damp.

The map is finished except for the pass. Master Corran insists the range ends at the Sable Teeth, that there is nothing beyond but scree and the moon sitting on the peaks like a coin on a tray. I went up on Tuesday with a chain, a compass and a lad from the mill who wanted to see the serpent. He did see it. It lay coiled on a ledge above the water between two standing blades of rock the locals call the Sentinels, and it did not move when we passed. Its tongue tasted the air near our boots. Then it slid into the river and was gone.
The ring is the thing I cannot stop thinking of. Under the ledge, caught in a crack of grey stone, was a band of worn silver no wider than a thumbnail, with letters running round its inside edge too small to read without a glass. I have it wrapped in a handkerchief in my coat. I have not told Corran. I have a feeling that once a map carries a true mark, somebody will want to pick it up.
Write back soon. Tell me whether the bells in Hollin still ring at dusk, and whether you have made up your mind to marry the cooper.
