Six traditional dagger designs with banners

Traditional · Black and grey · Flash

A flash sheet of six dagger designs arranged in a grid on a pale background. Each dagger has a shaded blade, a decorated hilt or crossguard and a curled ribbon banner below the point. The linework is bold and black, with grey shading that gives the blades and hilts a rounded, dimensional look.

The drawer under the counter at Lowther's sticks in damp weather, so you have to lift it by the left corner before it slides. Inside, beneath the brass scales and a row of unredeemed wristwatches, lie six sheets of dagger drawings the last owner left in the back room, each blade pinned to the paper with its ribbon curling under the point like a dropped handkerchief. Nobody in Calder Bridge has asked for them in eleven years, so when the man in the grey coat comes in on a wet Tuesday asking whether there is anything sharp for sale, you are the only one who thinks of the drawer.

He doesn't want a knife. He wants the sheet, and he turns it toward the window to study the grey shading as though it were the edge of something. He tells you his brother drew these above a fish market in Hull before the war, and that the one with the beaded collar was the last thing he ever inked. You ask what the banners are for. He says that's where the name goes, the one you carry and never say out loud. You take his two pounds ten and don't ask him to explain.

After he has gone, the bell still swinging over the door, you lift the drawer again to put the rest away and notice that the empty ribbon under the sixth dagger has been pencilled over in a careful hand. It is not a name you know. You fold the paper along the blade's spine, ease the drawer shut so it won't stick again, and go to the window to watch the rain carry the grey coat around the corner.
