Geometric arrow and triangle flash sheet
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
A flash sheet of about a dozen vertical geometric designs, mostly arrows and stacked triangles joined by thin lines, circles and dots. The linework is fine and even, with solid black areas used sparingly for chevrons, triangle tips and a bar. The drawings are in dark ink on a pale background, with small copper-coloured studs in the top left corner.

The theodolite had been dropped twice on the descent from Carreg Ddu, and Mistress Oriel Vane would not let the boy near it again. She sighted along the brass for the third time that morning, counting the pegs the mapmaker had driven into the scree. Seven pegs, seven arrows, each point turned north by the same sharp angle, as if the mountain had been given a set of instructions and had obeyed them badly.

The boy, Tomos, had drawn the arrows in the ledger the night before while she slept, using a stub of pencil and the ruler from her case. He had not been wrong about the shape of the land. Where the ridge dipped he had set a small circle over the line, and where the stream came down from the cwm he had stacked three triangles, each one a little smaller than the last, until they stopped being triangles and became a question. She did not ask him what the question was. Children were allowed their diagrams.
By noon the cloud had lifted off the pass and she could see the lower valley clearly, the chapel roof, the thin smoke of the inn. She laid the ledger flat on a boulder and traced the lines with one finger. The arrows did not point to the chapel. They pointed to a single dot the boy had placed far beyond the last peg, where the map was blank and the paper had been left white.
She closed the ledger, shouldered the case, and started down the path toward the dot, because a measurement that refuses to end somewhere is only half a measurement.
