Geometric arrow flash sheet

Geometric · Black and grey · Flash

The sheet shows seven vertical arrow designs, each built from arrowheads, feathers, diamonds, triangles, circles and small dots. The linework is clean and uniform in black ink, with dotwork used for shading and texture within the shapes. The designs are arranged in loose columns across an off-white background, with generous spacing between them.

By the fourth floor the lift has given up, so you climb with the theodolite case knocking against your hip and count the landings in the dark stairwell. Flat 14 is the one the council wants measured before Thursday. Somebody on the nineteenth floor has been complaining that the block leans, and you have promised Mrs Okafor's son you will prove it or prove nothing at all.

Up top, the wind comes through the broken pane of the roof access door with a sound like paper being folded. You set the tripod on the gravel by the water tank, level the bubble, and sight down the first line: from the corner of the old crane base, through the lift motor housing, to the tip of the aerial on Crossways House. Three triangles of distance, a diamond where the lines cross. Everything lines up as neatly as a drawing someone has taken care over.

Then the number on the screen changes, and you realise the block is perfectly plumb and the tower opposite is the one that has moved. You write it down twice. Below you a kettle clicks on in somebody's kitchen, a radio plays, and the whole estate goes on standing where it always stood, pointing back at you.
