Sixteen labelled watercolour rune designs
Colour · Flash
A four by four grid of stylised rune-like symbols, each captioned with a printed English name such as Fearless, Precision, Parabatai and Clairvoyant Sight. The shapes vary from angular and spiked to looping and curved, with some drawn as an eye or a dagger-like form. Each symbol is filled with soft watercolour washes in green, blue, red, yellow and dark navy on an off-white background.

By the third week of the season you have stopped counting the marks on the big canvas, but Mrs Okonedo still makes you read them aloud before the gates open. Angelic Power, Fearless, Equilibrium, Fortitude, down the top row like a shopping list for a bold day. You are the new hand on the cake walk and the ghost train, and you have never once been asked to do anything more dangerous than fetch her tea, so you assume the list is decoration until the Tuesday the generator dies.

Then the lights go out across the whole field, and the only thing still glowing is the painted board over the seer's booth, its washes of green and red catching the last of the sunset. Mrs Okonedo puts a hand on your shoulder and points to the one labelled Precision. "Trace it on the back of my wrist," she says, "then go and find Dell's boy before the wheel stops with the children still on it."
You do it with a bingo marker because the ink is all gone. Your hand shakes the whole length of the stroke. Out on the field the dark is full of shouting, and then, oddly, not, because you have started to hear the music again, the calliope tune the wheel plays when it is turning right. You walk toward it without looking back at the board, and the mark on your skin holds its shape the whole way across the mud.
