Stylised turtle designs in four colours
Colour · Flash
A grid of nine stylised turtles in blue, green and pink sits on the left, with one larger brown turtle on the right beside a vertical column of dots. Each turtle has a bold spiral or scroll pattern across its shell and body, drawn with solid filled shapes and simple outlines. The plain white background isolates each design for easy viewing.

The rain has been coming sideways off the harbour since seven, and you have stacked the stencil sheets under a tarpaulin that sags in the middle like a hammock. Nine little turtles sit on the top sheet in blue, green and pink, and beside them stands a single brown one with its column of dots, the way a lighthouse stands apart from the harbour wall. Mrs Okafor from the fish stall stops at your pitch with her hood up and her eyes on the brown one. She says the nine are for children and tourists. The brown one, she says, has a spiral that turns the right way.

You tell her the spiral was cut by hand, one curl of the blade, and that the others were printed off the same plate and coloured in afterwards. She doesn't believe you. She counts the dots with a wet fingertip: seven, a trail running down the page toward nothing. "Where do they go?" she asks. "Wherever the last one stopped," you say, which is what your father used to say when he sold lobster pots from this same pitch, and she laughs despite herself.
She buys the brown one and pays in coins still warm from her apron pocket. You fold it along the dotted line so the rain won't reach the spiral. When you pack up at dusk, the tarpaulin has taken on so much water that the blue turtles have bled into the pink, and the green ones have slid off the sheet entirely. Only the sheet you kept inside your coat is dry, and on it, in the empty space where the brown turtle used to be, you find one new dot, freshly inked, leading off toward the sea.
