Skateboard with flames and blue flowers
Traditional · Colour · Flash
The design shows a skateboard seen from below, with a lettered banner across its deck and two blue five-petal flowers with dark outlines on either side. Orange and yellow flames rise behind the flowers and the lower board. Bold black outlines and flat solid colour fills give it a classic traditional look on a plain pale background.

Nobody in Sallow Wells had seen a board with fire under it until Tobias Crane came over the Grey Mile road the fourth week of the drought, the deck strapped to a donkey that did not care for the arrangement. The banner across the wood had been hand-lettered and half worn away by sand, and on either side of it blue flowers had been painted with petals outlined thick as rope. Orange flames climbed out from under the wheels as though the board had been left too long beside a stove.

The old women said a board that rolls without a push is either a curse or a message. Tobias said it was neither. It was a wager. He had bet his cousin a mule against a stretch of hardpan that he could ride the board from the water tower to the bend at Cold Spring without once setting foot on the ground. The cousin had laughed, and the mule had laughed too, which mules do not do, and that was the end of arguing.
Halfway down the hill the wheels found a seam of cracked clay and sang. Tobias leaned into it. The blue flowers blurred into the flames, the banner cracked over his head like a sail, and for the length of three breaths the whole town below seemed to be rushing up to meet him. He came out at the bend with his hat gone and both elbows bleeding, but the board was still under his feet.
He paid the wager in water, not in mule. The next morning the board stood against the tower with its flames still warm from the road, and the children of Sallow Wells took turns riding it down to the spring. Nobody asked Tobias where he had learned to ride. The road had taught him, and the road was not finished with the town.
